Festival in Focus 2: Donka: A Letter to Chekhov

Please come along to the second of our Festival in Focus talks for the 2011 Perth International Arts Festival.  Join Chris Edmund of the WA Academy of Performing Arts for a talk based on the key theatrical event of the Festival, Donka: A Letter to Chekhov.

Date:  Tuesday, 7 December 2010

Time:  6.30pm

Venue: The Dolphin Theatre, UWA

Admission free for Friends of the Festival and accompanying guest.

Chris Edmund is Coordinator of the Acting Department at WAAPA. In his Directing career he has directed over 150 productions, from new writing to the classical repertoire, and he counts both Hugh Jackman and Frances O’Connor among his former students.

His talk will provide an insight into the plays and writings of Anton Chekhov, whose life is celebrated in Donka: A Letter to Chekhov. He will also share his own experiences of adapting work from script to stage and the process involved in interpreting plays into contemporary productions.

We will also be joined by the Festival’s Artistic Director, Shelagh Magadza who will explain the ins and outs of securing this wonderful piece for the 2011 Festival.

Donka: A Letter to Chekhov was commissioned to open the prestigious Chekhov International Theatre Festival in 2010.  It was received with a 15 minute standing ovation and has enthralled audiences the world over. It is a poetic piece which weaves together physical theatre, music and elegant set design.  This is Chekhov as you’ve never seen him – a romantic dreamer who filled his life with humour and satire.

A cash bar will be open on the evening so please come and mingle with other Friends before or after the talk. The Festival in Focus talks are designed to engage the Friends of the Festival with the Festival program and provide some extra insight into the performances.
As numbers will be limited please RSVP friends@perthfestival.com.au or phone 6488 8625
