Waltzing the Wilarra
Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company (Australia)
By David Milroy

Join Charlie, Elsa and Fay as they take you on a musical journey back to 1940s post-war Perth. Against a backdrop of curfews, and the fear of arrest for consorting, whites and blacks manage to form their own club. For a night they can experience rare happy times singing, dancing and with a little luck ... find romance!

Forty years on, as the club faces demolition, our three characters stage a musical reunion in protest. The trio reflects upon loves lost and found, dark secrets are revealed and we discover that reconciliation is more than saying sorry. Finding another level of forgiveness is at the heart and soul of Waltzing the Wilarra.*

A teaming of two of Australia's leading Indigenous theatre makers, David Milroy (Windmill Baby) and Wesley Enoch (The Sapphires), Waltzing the Wilarra is an original music theatre work featuring an all-star Indigenous cast.

The cast is superb. Highlights are Ursula Yovich's wide-ranging, soaring voice, Trevor Jamieson's sensitive renderings of a complex, ambivalent character in Charlie, and Dingo's panto-dame slap-down of serving king and country, which is uproarious and perfectly pitched. THE AUSTRALIAN

This is a terrific production and Enoch has marshalled a powerful, charismatic cast. THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

Constant vaudevillian asides, snappy musical numbers and genuinely hilarious comedy routines keep the play rolling along at a manic, highly entertaining, speed. PERTHNOW
