Event Program

The Red Shoes
Kneehigh Theatre (UK)
Based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen. Adapted and directed by Emma Rice.

A young girl tricks her blind stepmother into buying her a pair of risqué red shoes. After dancing, spinning and revelling wildly in the freedom of her sensual new prize, she is horrified to discover the shoes won't come off ... or stop dancing.

Luckily one man has the chops to provide a solution.

This dark, witty and highly original take on Hans Christian Andersen's classic story sees a wonderfully warped cast dipping into music, mime, dance and devilishness to entertain while reminding us of life's precariousness.

Now 30 years strong, Cornwall's Kneehigh Theatre have a sterling reputation for fresh, vibrant and emotionally-charged shows that often use myths and fairytales as their jumping off point.

In raucous vaudeville fashion Kneehigh sings, prances and, of course, dances its way to evocations of some extremely dark places, including the horrors of two world wars ... Adults shouldn't miss it. THE AUSTRALIAN

The performances exalt the grotesque without losing connection to their humanity. SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

Giddy, grisly and gorgeous. THE OBSERVER

Delirious, witty, macabre ... A show to die for. THE GUARDIAN

[The Red Shoes] is a celebration of theater. But ... it also probes the warping desperation within the compulsion to create art. THE NEW YORK TIMES
