Aftermath
Written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, directed by Jessica Blank (USA)
The New York Theatre Workshop Production

Transformative and touching theatre of real life.

March 20, 2003 is a date the ordinary people of Iraq will never forget, a day that changed their lives forever. It was the day the Americans arrived.

In June 2008, award-winning writers Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen travelled to Jordan to interview a cross-section of Iraqi citizens who had fled the chaos and violence of the American invasion. Their firsthand accounts of life since that fateful day have been crafted into a powerful and immediate storytelling experience that puts a human face on the conflict.

The nine subjects - including an imam, a pharmacist and a theatre director - provide pinpricks of understanding in a world of dark complexity, casting a moving spectrum of heartbreak and hope.

These stories, drawn from actual lives, cumulatively build compelling, moving images THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

The acting was virtually flawless by the extremely professional and experienced cast. Aftermath is an emotive piece of theatre which may provoke empathy, anger and perpetuate understanding. AUSTRALIAN STAGE

There is subtle movement and clever spotlight and shadow play, but they are always servants to the riveting story-telling. THE AUSTRALIAN

It's gripping from its opening moments, and makes necessary, unmissable theatre ... I wish all documentary theatre were this good. ALISON CROGGON, THEATRE CRITIC

Aftermath is unsettling and purposeful theatre … few are better crafted, or offer more rewards to those who visit. FROMTHETURNSTILES.BLOGSPOT.COM
