The First Beautiful Thing
La Prima Cosa Bella

Director: Paolo Virzi, Italy, 122min, M
In Italian with subtitles

Moving seamlessly from past to present, this touching and often funny drama about family and forgiveness opens in the Tuscan port of Livorno in 1972 with Anna, an attractive, fun-loving spirit, being crowned the town's 'Most Beautiful Mother'. The triumph enrages her husband, amuses daughter Valeria and horrifies her only son, Bruno - setting off a chain of events that transforms the family forever.

Forty years later, Bruno, a misanthropic professor, reluctantly returns to his hometown to assist his dying mother. Bittersweet memories are brought to the fore as Bruno and Valeria struggle to reconcile with each other and their still indomitable mother before it's too late.
