The Manganiyar Seduction
Directed by Roysten Abel (India)

An uplifting experience for the spirit.

Be swept away by a dazzling theatrical celebration as director Roysten Abel transforms a traditional Indian music concert into a visual and aural extravaganza, slowly revealing 43 performers hidden in a whimsical 'magic box'.

Inspired by the windows of Amsterdam's red light district, individual curtained compartments framed by carnival lights open one by one to reveal a solo musician, then another and another. The build-up of instruments and voices unfolds into a lush, resoundingly joyous spectacle of melody, rhythm and song.

The Manganiyars are a caste of desert musicians who have traditionally performed for the kings of Rajasthan in India. Their high-energy, life-affirming repertoire ranges from songs written by Sufi mystics to ballads about kings and special songs marking occasions such as birth, marriage, rains and feasts.

The Manganiyar Seduction was first performed at the 2006 Osians Cine Festival in Mumbai and has since played around the world to overwhelming praise.

A joyous, communal experience of the seductive power of music. THE IRISH INDEPENDENT

Singers work themselves into small moments of rapture on high notes as though overflowing with the expressive intensity of the moment. SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
