Kawasaki's Rose
Kawasakiho Ruze

Director: Jan Hřebejk, Czech Republic, 100min, MA
In Czech with subtitles

How does a country remember its collective past yet overcome a history of secrets and denials?

A highly respected psychiatrist is due to be honoured for his opposition to Czechoslovakia's communist regime and dedication to free thinking. On the eve of the presentation, however, a secret file threatens to compromise his esteemed reputation and shatter the very foundations of his family.

Without resorting to easy sensationalism, Kawasaki's Rose examines the complex moral dilemmas faced by those living under authoritarian rule. It is a stirring meditation on collective memory by esteemed Czech director Jan Hřebejk (Cosy Dens, Divided We Fall).

There is no doubting Jan Hrebejk’s serious intent, or the quality of his filmmaking. The acting is flawless, the cinematography sublime. EYE FOR FILM
