How I Ended This Summer
Kak Ya Provyol Etim Letom
SOMERVILLE EXCLUSIVE

Director: Aleksei Popogrebsky, Russia, 124min, M
In Russian with subtitles

Desolate environments and the individuals that choose to inhabit them have long attracted the attention of cinema. Such landscapes have vividly evoked tales of lunacy, fear and wonder, all of which are evident in this starkly beautiful thriller.

Sergei and Pavel work on a remote weather station in the panoramically awe-inspiring Arctic Circle, their only opportunity for outside conversation being meteorological readings radioed to headquarters. While Sergei's shadowy past hints at potential violence, Pavel displays a casual attitude, immersing himself in music and videogames. Initial impressions slowly shift however as Pavel's rationality dissipates and his imagination emerges as the pair's worst enemy.

A majestic drama ... A terrific exploration of human fragility. VARIETY
