Soundtrack to a Legend
Jack DeJohnette (USA)

A live film score that'll knock you off your feet!

Long-time Miles Davis collaborator Jack DeJohnette and his tight band unleash an unforgettable night of bone-crunching jazz to A Tribute to Jack Johnson, William Cayton's 1971 documentary about the world’s first black heavyweight champion.

Fighter Jack Johnson was a hero to the black community for both his physical prowess and his battles against racism in the early 20th century. Told through original footage and images, his story is an inspiration and rips open an era of deep racial divide and raw emotion.

Miles Davis originally scored the documentary with the punchiest riffs and most cracking playing of his career. In Davis' band at the time, DeJohnette uses the score as his jumping off point, while adding vivid flourishes and punch all of his own.

Suitability: ages 16+/years 11 & 12 Music, S&E, English, History, Indigenous Studies, Media
