A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop
San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi
SOMERVILLE EXCLUSIVE

Director: Zhang Yimou, China, 92min, M
In Mandarin with subtitles

Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, House of the Flying Daggers) takes the Coen brothers' first and arguably best film, Blood Simple, and transports it from modern-day Texas to the edge of a painted 19th-century Chinese desert. Shot in eye-popping colour, this exhilarating and inventive remake is set at a time when guns were new and swords and spears were still the weapons of choice.

Wang is a lazy and avaricious noodle shop owner who treats his wife with utter contempt - so it's little wonder she seeks love and solace in the arms of one of the shop's employees. Wang’s scheme to murder his adulterous wife and her lover goes horribly awry, leading to mayhem, mistakes and murder.

Suitability: Chinese (Mandarin) language students
Themes: betrayal, murder, love
